Report: This is a report to help any one out there planning on fishing SP this year. As all of you may or may not know we will be able to fish Pablo one more year before they close the lake to work on the dam. This will probably be the last shot at a Pablo record for quite some time. The lake level will remain low for most of year because of the dam but don't get discouraged there will be good fishing year. I will be guiding on the lake this year for any of you who want to get one last shot at an SP HOG!! This past year was a great one at Pablo for me and my clients. We saw fish landed up to 11lbs. and had 2 fish hooked this year that were well into the TEEN range. Even during the low water of summer/fall we saw an unbelievable amount of fish between 4-8 lbs. with a lot of 15-20 fish days. We also got spots this past year to 5LBS! Once the lake opens the weather will play a big part on where the fish are. If we have good weather and the water temp is 50-51 the spots will move into the pre-spawn big time and multiple fish days will be the norm. Start off in the back of scow and slowly!! move outward until you locate the fish, they will be schooled up so work the area throughly once you locate them. If we have nasty weather stay on the main lake and fish around run-offs from the bank out to 25 ft. I would start off with drop-shotting(roboworms:black grape, margarita mutilator, witches T), jigs(brn/brn,black/purp) spinnerbaits(wht/wht, wht/chart) if the weather is nasty. If we've had good weather with some sun and higher water temps(50+) start with any reaction baits in a shad or trout pattern for bigger baits stick with the swimbait or jig. For any info on a guided trip(I also go to Delta,Clear Lake,Oroville,Berryesa) please e-mail me. GOOD LUCK OUT THERE! Please! Practice Catch and Release especially on the bigger females
    City: Martinez

Tips: P.S. I was critized last year for trying to help fellow SP anglers out and this year I will not be responding to any negative feedback. If anybody has any questions about fishing any of the lakes I guide on or about fishing in general please feel free to post it or e-mail me.

Report: Decided to give my local lake a break and fish SP. The extra hour from the day light savings felt good and I almost didn't get out in time. But nontheless fished till about 1:30pm and ended up with four decent trout in the 2-4lb range no DFG size trout. Fish were caught in the shallows(4' to 8')on green(Chartreus)power bait spiked with garlic scent and 2LB-4LB main line and leader.
Didn't really notice until I was leaving that they are giving out warning notices when you buy your permit on what amount of certain species you can eat out of the lakes and still be ok health wise, I didn't know that was an issue. Anyways I must say that the staff that run the concessions are top notch on the customer service department and are a great group and made my last day to fish SP a very pleasant one till the re-opener in February.
    City: Daly City

Tips: What can I say when fishing for trout. The right place and right time and right presentation will decide if get any fish. Example, the guy fishing just to the right me about 6 yards down shore while I was fishing got the black and white(skunked) and I ended up with four. Go figure! but theres been times when I was the guy on the right scratching my head trying to figure out what was going on with the eminent smell of black & white upon me. Right place and right time and right presentation at that time.

Report: A startling meeting on Monday 8-16-04 with the EPA, Dept of Agriculture, and East bay parks authorities has revealed the studies of Mercury in the lakes of the Bay area. Del Valle, Coyote, Chabot, Pablo, Etc. The mercury is becoming a big problem and at the meeting they recomended not eating any non planted fish out of the lake. WOW If the public eats too much of the fish health hazards will increase. I am not saying this because I am a big bass man I am stating what was said at the meeting. You anglers that take fish home need to read the handouts posted at the Marinas of all the Bay area lakes. This is not a joke
    City: Castro Valley

Tips: Catch and release all fish caught. We may loose this lake forever due to the highest Mercury levels of all the surrounding lakes

    Report: Thanks. BassinBy,
I actually only got to fish the river on the Hghwy 89 I think it was for just a little while. I was throwing a casting bubble with an olive colored fly/nymph. No fish. My neighbor had fished Stampede lake and got ten on the troll. Anyway, I should of drove down the road and hit up the other bodies of water, but time has a funny way of running out to quick

Report: Just to add...I do not keep hogs, only 12-13 inchers if I decide I want to clean and cook them. I understand that we must preserve the big fish for sport. But complaining about it here isn't going to change anything. Need to get the regulations changed.

    Tips: AGAIN.......HAVE FUN FISHING!

Report: Just a comment, black bass are my favorite fish to eat. I don't eat alot, I release more than 95% of my catch...what I can't stand is other bass fisherman that insist you release all the bass you catch, Last time I've read the regulations, you can keep 5. So why do people get mad when they see someone keeping a legal size bass? These people are not breaking the law. I see fisherman keep bass all the time and it doesn't bother me one bit. Keep an open mind and just have fun, if you don't want people taking bass...write to the correct people to get the regulations changed to lower the limit. FYI...I hate cleaning fish.
    City: Oakland

Tips: DON'T HATE!!! Have fun people...that's why we fish.

    Water Temp: 72 degrees

Report: Fished all day from 6:30 am to 8:30 pm. The basses were jumping when I got in and heck of anxious setting up my rigs. I started with cranks and had alot of followers, then switched to spinnerbaits and alot of followers, still no takers so I went smaller... spinners roostertails and bang a 1 lber nailed it but no hookset, I saw the fish and it spitted it out in front of me on the dock... they'd all were still jumping feeding, I'd wonder if this is breakfast for the basses feeding on bugs... lol, make me wanna try fly fishing. I didn't get a solid bite until 8pm, weightless plastic was useless all day. Caught 1 2 lber at 8pm which I released to fight another day. Trout fishing been slow too. A bank guy using catfish bait caught a friggin 7lber .. no picture for him cause the concession was CLOSED after 7pm but he weighted her at 7lbs. He told me she bit around 2 feet from shore. The dude kept the fish and decided to eat it... lol, I wonder what so good about basses, damn meat is tough and tasteless IMO, crappies are the best eating fishes in the sunfish family. Besides, most LM and SM basses are internally fill with mercury. Folks, better catch and release than getting sick eating basses. Oh well... that was it today for me just 1 solid bite around the boat launch. I didn't see any fishes around the tules but alot of shads feeding on bugs all morning.
    City: Concord

Tips: Don't waste your time getting up early cause they'd ain't biting until late afternoon when you get solid hooksets ... after 3pm is a good time to start and fish till San Pablo closed which is 9pm, a good solid 6 hours of bass fishing.

Report: Fished a couple days on this Memorial weekend. 1st day I fished a southbay lake morning bite and grounded twelve bass from 1/2lbs to 2lbs. For the afternoon bite I decided head to San Pablo to give it a try. The bite was real slow there and got nothing. I did see a nice estimated 7 lber that an old man had caught earlier that morning on a crawler, it was dead on a rope. No hope of saving that fish.

    Tips: Fished slow....w/plastics

    Water Temp: 67 degrees

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Fished last friday 5/22 and gotten 2 bites all day again. Both males around 1 1/2 pounds, seems like the females and momma hawgs are DEEP feeding on shads around the reservoir and middle of the lakes. I don't rent boat atSan Pablo because it's so expensive and when you get skunk or catch 1-2 fishes it just ain't worth it. The trout bitesstop for some reason, maybe they'd are feeding on baby frys from the bassess, carps or crappies. Well, if some of you want to know the action around the dam it's real dead, you have to work real hard all day to get some bites, but if you do get a bite it's usually a big fish, my buddy caught a 11+ pounder momma hawg last year there but didn't have any luck this year. The cranks and spinnerbaits are the only thing working for me right now, getting too much snags losing plastics dropshotting around the tules and rocks, alot of gears lost so far. The crawlers netting bluegills right now so the cranks and spinners are the only productive bait so far.
    City: Concord

Tips: Just keep working the rapalas and spinnerbait around docks and tules, 20+ cast will net a couple of 1-2 pounders, plastics work too but prepare to lose gear and water level is down exposing alot of big weeds, tules, and rocks. The bait get caught when you starting cranking it back on shore, a boat will help if you own one and you are deeper water than on shore.

Tips: Nightcrawler are pretty much working than powerbait

Report: Fished San Pablo Sat. Five fish five hours. 4 bass and one trout, all in the 1 1/2 range on crank bait. Missed three, not a bad lake. All fish were near structor (Reeds, logs). The fish were not to big, but quite spunky, great fight. No 20+. This is the first time fishing this lake, I was expecting a lot less luck from reading the prior post. I couldn't use the big johnson, a little tough on the trolling motor getting to the far N coves (Wind). Maybe I'll look for a tow North next time. I think with a litte time on this lake, you could wip it on. The finder showed alot of fish. Are most Bass North of the launch, any luck at the dam ?.
    City: Alameda

Tips: Crankbait worked well. Used spinner,Rat trap with no luck, not a big worm guy.
