      California Delta 4/30/2018

      Visibility 1 – 4 Feet
      Wind 6 – 15 mph

Got a late start this morning. Managed to get out around 9:30 this morning. The tide was falling fast so we decided to follow it.

We had no game plan for the day, so more or less just a relaxed day on the river. Overcast skies with a good breeze coming from the south; the reaction bite should be good. Sure enough, the chatterbait got most of the bites, along with some buzzbait fish. The two’s and three’s bit pretty good for a couple of hours, but with the tide falling, the bite shut down.

With most of our cover in only inches of water, we switched to weedlines. The bite was not as consistent as it was earlier, but we managed to catch a few on drop-shots, swimbaits, chatterbaits, and light punching.

By the afternoon, we ground out another handful of bass, but it was a challenge. Crankbaits and Senkos got the majority of our fish. I even caught a three inch bass on a 6 inch Senko; just goes to show you how aggressive the little ones are, and how effective the Tsuyoi Weedless Wacky Hook is at catching fish of all sizes.

With the occasional cloud moving in front of the sun, throwing a buzzbait in shallow water yielded some good bass for my father.

In the end, I started with two rods, but by the afternoon, I had six rods on the deck. All six rods got fish, but that tells you how inconsistent the fish were today. The only good bite we found was in the morning fishing reaction with the tide up. Once the tide fell, the bites got few and far between.

Tips: Caught quite a few pre-spawners today. I’m thinking a batch moved up with the full moon, but with the cooler temps, the majority are still waiting for the weather to stabilize.

I threw six rods today, all six got fish. There was no “go to bait” for today. That said, chatterbaits and drop-shots got the better fish for the day.

    • Water Temp: 59-64

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Went out with bed fishing and monster bass in mind but the weather had other plans for me! The crappie spawn is done and gone and there are millions of fry in the shallow flats on the south side of the lake! The wind ruined any chance to find beds for me. Also, it was blowing about 15 the entire time (Friday and Saturday) Well I managed to get a really good bite out of a Vision 110 in black shad and bladed A rigs! Totaled out at 25 bass through the 2 days and that felt like a tough bite because of the front! This fishery is unreal and there are so many talented and kind anglers on it! Biggest bass came on a white on silver double willow Dobyns spinner bait with a single tail grub trailer on the edge of the toolies, but that was my only bite on it and i wasted hours throwing a hammer chatter bait with a zeko in a grayish white color! Have fun fish on I hope this helps!

Tips: Find the large flats isolated from the wind, then find the bait that are in the toolies and throw an a rig, underspin, jerkbait or a spinner bait for the big ones.

    • Water Temp: 62-68

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: I had a really nice guide trip with 3 fun guys who were also great bass anglers! We spent most of our time in the narrows as the bite was good, especially in the afternoon. We hit one spot that produced some good spotted bass and the only smallie we caught. It has always amazed me at Berryessa how one species doesn't show up on a particular day or night. Had been catching lots of smallies on recent trips and only one this trip! Drop-shotting is always the best technique with 4 in the boat and it was good this trip. We had spots up to nearly 3 1/2 lbs and largemouth up to 2 /12. Five best around 15 1/2 - 16 lbs. Good bite!!! Various color Robo worms were the top fish-getters!

Tips: We saw a large school of shad in the back of one of the coves. Fun to see that with largemouth bass chasing them!! It is great to see but not easy to catch! They know what they want and are not interested in hitting lures. Bass generally seemed to be bunched up on walls - moving in and out of the coves. If you found a small flat next to a wall - bingo!! Lots of bass there. Weeds are beginning to grow with the somewhat clear water at the backs of coves. Topwater - soon!!! Most of our big spots came on off-shore structure, probably areas they can spawn one with little fishing pressure. That is where we got the 2 biggest spotted bass. Tried to get a photo of the three of them with the biggest 5 before releasing them, but just hard to get those bigger spotted bass to pose. Man, they are strong!!!

    • Water Temp: 57-62

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: I had a nice guide trip yesterday (Fri) with a very good lady bass angler who I have guide before. She is a talented bass fisherwoman!! She comes self-contained and ready for bear - er, bass!! Fishing had really changed in the last week with a move to the shallows. We caught them as shallow as 2 feet!! Average depth was around 10 to 15 feet in the morning and down to 25 feet in the afternoon. I can't seem to time Bullards well this year. Lots of cold wind yesterday - again! When I left Yuba City in the morning, howling wind. When we left the ramp at Bullards, sunny and calm - until about 11 am. The wind found us - imagine that! This time is was a Clear Lake pattern - wind switching directions all the time. Didn't seem to slow the bite however, except may for the bigger bass. We did catch lots of keepers up to near 2 lbs, but didn't get any toad bites. Still a lot of shadows in spite of the higher sun now. We did find some of the bigger bass in the shadows. She came prepared with some of her favorite baits and they worked well. That will be her secret! Drop-shotting MM111 Robos worked well for me. Maybe because of the winds, big bass seemed hard to find.

Tips: Hard to give any tips because the smaller bass bite was wide open. Flats with a drop-off produced well yesterday. The bigger bass were always a little deeper, 20-25 feet. Senko bite in the trees was pretty good.

    • Report: Delta Report…. Wild West Anglers here this week at Big Break Marina Friday Through Sunday. Striper Fishing Goes Again Off This week! A great Time to remember to Join California Striped Bass Association! Need More Members that Love to Fish and Support this Great fishery! Join Here!

Isleton Striper Trolling and plug casting has toughened the last few days. Water temps raised a bit this week and a few more stripers in the Cache Slough area responded. Trolling the Angry Eyes and Savage Preys is the best bet. Sturgeon anglers moved west .

Rio Vista- Trolling is scoring many limits stripers and occasionally, a 12-15 pounder caught. Savage Prey and P-line Angry Eye lures are key for the trolling anglers. Red White Classic Shimmer jigs around pumps getting stripers. Shore bound anglers are scoring both species. The best place to score a striped bass or sturgeon remains Sherman Island in the area of the Power Lines, use Sardines or Red’s Bloody Eel.

Walnut Grove . Bank anglers tossing shad and eel prevail for an occasional sturgeon or Striper those looking for bigger bites. Drifting live baits for stripers cracking the 10 pound plus keeps anglers smiling. Trolling Savage Prey baits colors 8 to 10 foot deep is key as the spring push starts up. The Dirty “D” is earning its name and conditions are lets say turbulent. Stay in the Wimpys area for best conditions. Best bet, Savage Prey and P-line Angry Eye lures.

Discovery Bay The Bite is On! The black bass bite has continued rolling. River2Sea in Shad and Crankbait patterns rocking the Bed fish are around. Most Blackie anglers are sticking with Senkos and Strike King Rage Swimmers swim baits paired with Fatsack Swim Jigs, clouds forecast this weekend slow Fatsack Tackle blades and Rat-LTrap Stutter Steps searching ledges near sparse tulle flats.

Frank’s Tract Black bass bite is at a consistent pace warm days only helps the Big Girls bite. Hematoma Beavers on over cast days also working well. We found a few Stripers and Black Bass with top water and Chili Craw Red Eye Shad. Others looking to score are starting to crank Chartreuse Shad 6th Sense baits and Big Poppa’s are solid options. Keeper sized stripes are grabbing Bubba Shad a bit more this week and trolled Angry Eye baits.

West Delta The stripers are here anchovies and sardines in many areas for bank anglers, Antioch Pier and along Sherman Island rd. Stripes to 18 pounds have grabbed Red/White Classic shimmer jigs. Trollers it’s getting started on both sides with Red Barn being the top choice, if they aren’t there move to the Eddo’s Side. Chartreuse patterns are the best bet.

    • Water Temp: 66

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: My buddy Ryan Cook headed out to Lake McClure on 4/28 and shared what he found:
"Decided to head out McClure for an afternoon session and the bite was on fire. We fished about 6 hours and caught over 40 fish. We targeted wind-blown flats where we found bass pushing bait into the shallows. They were busting bait on the surface for over 4 hours in a couple different key areas. We threw underspins and a variety of topwater baits. Nothing big, but we did find a couple in the 3 pound range."

Tips: Head out to McClure for some steady action. McClure is a beautiful lake with a great mix of spots and largies.

    • Water Temp: 63

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: My buddy Ryan Cook headed out to New Melones on 4/27 and shared what he found:
      On the water: 6:00 AM
      Water Temp: 63
      Wind: 6-17mph
"Fished the lower end of the lake, the bite was good, but the bigger fish were few and far between. We threw Wacky Heads with 5 inch Senkos shallow while searching for bed fish. We located lots of small bucks and several big females, but the big females are not quite locked on the beds. After several hours of getting frustrated trying to catch the bed fish, we started slow-rolling underspins with a 3.75" swimbait trailer. We caught several more small fish and then found some good ones in about 15 feet of water on secondary points leading into spawning pockets. Our big fish of the day weighed in at just under 7 pounds with our second big fish pushing 5. Our best 5 fish limit went almost 20 pounds. We had a great day on the water."

Tips: Do what Ryan does, the guy catches big fish!

    • Water Temp: 63.4 degrees, elevation 816.44

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Launched at Lime Saddle, about 6:20 am, stopped fishing right at 10 am. Sure is nice launching now that the ramp owners clean wood on a regular basis. No issues now days, nothing like when they used to just let it stack up. Decent bite today, not quite killer bite but darn good. Picked up 31 fish today, but did work hard for them. Some fish as shallow as 10 foot and down to 35 feet. Most 20-30 foot. Water warmed lots over the last few days, found a high of 63.4 degrees, darn near hot. Water still a tad cloudy, but clearing lots since last week. Best fish today right at 15", 2 14 3/4", 3 14" and the rest decent 13-13 1/2" fish. Nothing less then 13" today. Should be great fishing from mow till next Dec. 4 -5 fish taken on the fall, so going to break out senko's next trip. Pictures in fishing forum.

    • Report: I forgot to mention that our 4th place weight was 15.87lbs - 5 smallmouth

    • Water Temp: 63-67

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: by AKBASSFISHING » Mon Apr 23, 2018 7:58 pm

      California Delta 4/23/2018

      Water Temp 63 – 67
      Visibility 2 – 4 ft
      Wind 6 – 11 mph

Launched around 6:30 in the morning. A steady western breeze put a nice ripple on the water. A frog/buzzbait combination yielded no results, even though conditions were ideal. We switched to chatterbaits and spinnerbaits and got some small males to go on them.

With the tide quickly coming in, we moved to a large spawning flat hoping to find some females moving up to spawn. To our surprise, we ran into a nice school of stripers. My father hooked into a 10 pound striper on a white swimbait, which put a good bend in his rod. I proceeded to cast my chatterbait and had the biggest striper I’ve seen on the delta, follow my bait. This beast could have easily gone 40+ pounds. A true monster. But, as soon the school appeared, they vanished.

After switching back, we started to throw Senkos in the areas we knew had beds. You could tell the weekend crew had done some damage, hundreds of empty beds; kinda sad to see that happen. We proceeded down the bank and managed some small males, but nothing more.

Finding the bite increasingly more difficult, we started cranking some rip-rap and found a fun crankbait bite. Again, nothing big, but still fun.

By the afternoon, the tide had dropped way out and the wind had subsided. After a short run, we stopped at another spawning flat (this one seemed to not be fished so bad as the other). Tossing the Senko combined with the Tsuyoi Weedless Wacky Hook and punch shot produced a good number of solid fish. After an hour or so, we had a decent limit of fish, but nothing to brag about haha.

With the gnats and humidity getting to an uncomfortable point, we called it a day and headed back.

      Tips: Notes

With fishing pressure at an all time high and the water starting to clear, these fish are becoming increasingly spooky. Get away from sight fishing, back off a bit, and fan-cast your water.Slow presentations caught us the better fish, Senkos and Punch shots got the better bites.

If you are new to the fishing game and want to get bit, getting a craw pattern crankbait and burning down the rocks will get ya bit (generally smaller fish, but still fun).

Lastly, the Delta is a very special place and we want to preserve this fishery, that means clean up after yourself (don’t toss garbage or line in the water) and always try to practice catch and release.

    • Water Temp: 68 to 70 F

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: My buddy Mickey Brunelli was out on Lake Don Pedro today reporting a solid bite. He and his partner Rob caught over 20 fish with the big fish going 5 pounds 11 ounces. Mickey reports the water was super clear and 68 to 70 degrees. The weather was perfect with highs in the 80s and light winds. They found fish in 10 feet of water on a variety of baits including topwater, jigs, senkos, spinnerbaits, and underspins.

Tips: Now is the time to hit the Motherlode lakes!

    • Water Temp: 56-59

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Mike Sperbeck and I fished our second Mountain Bass Association tournament at beautiful Lake Almanor yesterday - Saturday. I didn't hear the total number of boats, but over 30, We survived the early morning start but felt like popsicles when we arrived at our spot. Brrrrr!! By around noon, the weather had warmed with the sun out and the afternoon was drop-dead gorgeous!! What a beautiful lake - especially with the snow on all the surrounding mountains. The bite seemed a little slower than last year, probably because of the very cold weather the weekend before. Lots of beautiful smalies were weigh in, but only one over 4 lbs. Last year there were three and Mike had caught one of them. This year the big limit was over 17 lbs and two limits of 16+ lbs. Last year Mike and I had one of the 17 lb limits and took third. This year we fell a notch and didn't get a plaque. Darn - they were good looking plaques. We took fourth, one place out of the plaques! We did get a check and they paid down to 7th place - nice. Great bunch of anglers and good fellowship after the tournament. Next year I hear the are handing out heated jumpsuits. That is a rumor I am starting!!

Tips: Since there were no wrap-ups by the top finishers, can't give any tips. Folks were fishing all over the lake, just as we did. I though we got off to a rough start as Mike's second fish was a beautiful 5 3/4 lb brown trout. Wow - gorgeous fish!!! biggest brown I have see up close. How many of the trout boats we saw would love to catch that fish!! Don't think we caught anything deeper than 25 feet, but most were 10 to 20 feet. We got bites from super-jerks to nothing bites. Mike got our big smallie at 3.75 lbs and caught 3 of our 5 smallies to weigh-in. Lake was calm all day - very nice!!

    • Water Temp: 67 to 72

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Headed out to Kelsey Bass Ranch today with Steve and Frank. This was their first visit to KBR and their first experience in a kayak. I was eager to get them on the water and show them what KBR has to offer. Being avid fly fishermen, they started by throwing a multitude of flies on top. The fish weren't cooperating so we deciding to switch tactics. I rigged up some spinning rods with soft plastic creature baits and lizards and we were slow dragging them in the shallows on the west side of the lake. They both hooked up on some quality fish and got to experience how hard Kelsey Fish can pull! After catching multiple quality fish, we took a break and enjoyed some BBQ Tri-Tip sandwiches. For the afternoon session, we focused our efforts on the north end of the lake and the dam. They continued to hook up working bottom baits slowly. We did find a few frog fish on top but the bite is not quite there yet. Give it a few weeks and the top-water bite will be on fire! Overall, it was a great day. Steve and Frank both caught their personal best bass! Our best 5 went over 96". We put (2) 20" and (3) 18" Kelsey Chunks on the board.

Tips: Soft plastics on the bottom worked slowly. Topwater across and on the edges of the lilly pads and weed beds. Topwater bite will be red hot in the next few weeks!

      Water Temp: 59-63 degrees

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: I took a good friend of mine out on Thursday 4-19 who is a novice fisherman. We got on the water at 9:30 AM and the water temperature was at about 59 degrees. After launching out of Markley Cove we headed straight to Little Portuguese Cove. We were using a split shot rig with real worms and had a ton of success. The fish seemed to be in about 5-15 feet of water and the bite was very soft. We pulled in a lot of fish without setting the hook because we didn't feel the hit. We caught about 30 fish and had many more hits and fish on that we lost before getting them to the boat. Berryessa is about as good as it's going to get right now. We had success in the narrows, Paradise Cove and pretty much everywhere we went. After running out of worms (we had about 50 worms to start the day) we switched to drop shot and had success with that too. We hooked into 3 smallmouth bass that were in the 2.5 to 3 pound range and the looked full of eggs. We released those fish in hopes of catching some of those babies in a few years!! Also caught 2 big crappies. Good luck and hope to see you all on the water!!

Tips: split shot live worms was catching us a ton of fish. Slow moving them.

    • Water Temp: 56.6 to 57.8 degrees, elevation 811.82

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Got launched at Lime Saddle about 6:20 am, stopped fishing about right at 10 am. Damn, windy city this am, hate those days as my small boat moves like a kite in the winds. Winds tapered off about 9 am or so. Bite picked up a tad, but water still cool, 56.6 to 57.8 degrees in my travels. Even though the water still not quite right, bit much better today. Picked up 23 spots, best at 16", 1 15", 3-4 14" with most all others 13-13 1/2", and looking slightly fat, getting ready to dump those eggs. Fish are moving in closer to the banks, got a few at 15 feet, most 20-35 feet. Wild guess, 2 more weeks and should get 30 plus fish in the morning. Pictures in fishing forum.

    • Water Temp: 60-62

Water Clarity: Muddy (0-2 foot visibility)

Report: by AKBASSFISHING » Mon Apr 16, 2018 10:50 am

      California Delta 4/14/2018 – 4/15/2018
      Water Temp 60 - 62
      Visibility 1 – 3 feet
      Wind 5 – 10 mph (4/14) – 8 – 18 mph (4/15)

My Father and I fished the Yamamoto Big Bass Challenge this weekend. Overall, a fun and exciting event that drew a decent crowd.

      (4/14)
With adrenaline and coffee powering our bodies, we made our way to the launch ramp. We put in the water at around 5:30 in the morning and were set to fish at 5:50. With light just starting to peek over the horizon, we made the run to our first spot.

In previous weeks, this spot had proven very fruitful; a nice spawning flat. With the tide dropping out, we prepared to wreak havoc, but the fish had other ideas. After burning precious hours, a three pounder on a Senko is all we could muster.

With the tide quickly falling and our spot being hammered by multiple boats, my father called an audible. He decided to hit our next spot earlier than we planned to be there. With haste, we flew to our next spot.

(You know we had gone fast when you look at the motor and have about a hundred dead bugs on it haha)

We arrived at the spot with renewed hope. Not even five minutes at the spot, I got a light tick. I reeled down and slowly swept the rod across my chest; the fish didn’t move when I hooked her. Suddenly, she pulled back.

      “Get the net!”, I grunted.

With the fish fast approaching the boat, my father swiftly grabbed the net and put it over the side. As I brought her next to the boat, she proceeded to jump about a foot in the air. With speed and precision, my father caught her mid-air. In the boat, we could see she inhaled the Senko and the Tsuyoi Weedless Wacky Hook pinned her securely with minimal effort.

With a good fish in the boat and the last hour remaining, we ran back to weigh her.

At the scale, she weighed 6.08; good enough for the first seat. We had arrived with 15 minutes left in the hour, but the last five minutes had been the longest I had ever experienced. In the end, she held up.

Happy with the day, we prepared for the following day.

      (4/15)
The clouds and slight breeze blew over the delta. An epic day was in the brewing, but as the hours passed, those thoughts quickly evaporated. Reaction baits got short strikes and the slow presentations got bit, but not the correct quality we needed.

With the low tide and the the wind making an appearance, our bite had come and gone. Before we knew it, time was up.

Thankful we had got it done the previous day, we headed in. To be able to participate in the final 12 was a cool experience.

Met some cool people and had a blast at the event. Thank you to everyone who made it possible and also to my father who made the last minute call that saved the day.

      Tips: Notes:

The bass are in all three stages of the spawn. You still have some pre-spawners, spawners, and post-spawners. Pick your poison when chasing them.

Fishing slow was the main key to getting bit. The reaction baits got lots of short strikes, might be switching over to a crankbait soon.

These fish are also getting hammered right now, so thinking outside the box may be the key to getting that extra bite.

    • Water Temp: 60 to 64 F

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: 2018 MKA Motherlode Series event was held on Sunday, 4/15/18 at Lake Don Pedro. The weather conditions were great, the lake is nearly full, and the water is crystal clear in most places. The water temp was in the low 60s. The air temp peaked in the mid 70s. Few clouds with light to moderate winds did make it a little challenging. The bite was a little off from what most predicted. The fish were primarily holding in 20 to 30 feet of water and were focused on bottom baits that were either stationary or slow-moving. Most anglers reported catching fish on dropshot, carolina rig, ned rig, and stick baits. Ultimately, Kong Thao from Fresno, CA. figured them out and brought in a solid 3 fish, 56" limit for the win. The Trapper Tackle Big Fish of the Tournament (20.5" largemouth caught by Kong Thao) came on a Huddleston Deluxe swimbait in the same depth range. Kong reports that he focused his efforts on a cove that led into a spawning area. He described that were was a point in the middle splitting the cove into two arms. Additionally, there were fallen trees and rock piles which only made it more appealing. He quickly caught a 18.75" spotted bass on a Neko Rig which gave him the confidence to stay in the area. A little while later, he caught another solid fish on the Neko Rig, this time it was a 16.75" largemouth. He then saw trout busting the surface of the water and thought that they might be getting chased by bass. He picked up the Huddleston 68 Special Swimbait and chucked it between a rock pile and brush pile. The fish bit it on the way down and the fight was on. "I was afraid I was going to lose the fish. I set the hook and I hauled it in as fast as I could", said Thao. When he put the fish on the board it measured out at 20.5" and he reported he was "pumped". He was not expecting to win the tournament as he was on 15" fish in pre-fish. He took some advice from a good friend on where to fish and then followed his instincts to ultimately be crowned the 2018 MKA Motherlode Series Lake Don Pedro Champion.

Tips: The fish were out deeper than expected. It's important to adjust and let the fish tell you what's happening. Anglers that were able to adjust did well in this tournament.

    • Water Temp: 64.3

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: This past weekend I was able to spend fishing at Berryessa. I arrived late afternoon on Friday and went out with my friend Bob. We decided to fish from the ranch house to the vineyards and it payed off. Bob's five largest fish weighed a total of 12.5 pounds (see photos). We both caught limits of bass and a 2.5 pound crappie. We stayed out till we saw the sunset and headed back as it started to get dark. The following morning I went out on my own and decided I would start at the vineyards and fish my way back. There were about nine different tournaments and every point I passed had a boat. I searched the shallows to see if the bass were bedding and sure enough they were everywhere. I caught one on a jig which weighed just under six pounds and full of eggs I released her immediately and she headed straight back to the nest. With all the boat activity going on I was amazed that the fishing was so good. I found what worked best for me was the Speed Trap crank bait for a bigger fish but drop shoting caught more fish but smaller size it was all fun. My five best keepers weighed a total of 14.6 pounds which was fine with me (see photo). My buddy Albert called me but I was out by the vineyards already so I told him to fish from the shore drop shoting and he caught four nice bass (see photo). Tips: the fish know when the spawn is happening and its now ,in the vineyards I saw 2 big pigs boars, the bass is pushing the bait against the shore. feel free to call me for any fishing info.from 9am to 9pm 7 days a week. I used pro cure scents on drop shot worms.

    • Water Temp: 57.5 to 85.3 degrees, elevation 806.12

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Got launched at about 6:20 am, off the lake at 10 am, and to my surprise, 95% of the wood had been cleaned up and no issue at all launching, have never seen it this clean this time of year as the water comes up. Guess the dock owner decided to do his part and keep the ramp a tad safer then in the past. Water cooled over the last rains, found 57.5 to 58.3 in my travels. Kind of what I thought would happen with the rains last week. Bite slowed a tad too, had to work hard and got 11 spots, all 13-13 1/2" range, nothing larger today. Most taken 20 to 35 feet. Water got messed up, cloudy everyplace I went. Bottom line, the super bite is still another 2-3 weeks out is my guess. Picture is typical of all my fish today. Picture in fishing forum.

      California Delta 4/10/2018
      Water Temp 60-64
      Visibility 1 – 4 feet
      Wind 5 – 15 mph

Another little front is moving through the area… better go fishing…

Got out on the water around 7:00 in the morning. Conditions looked great, overcast skies with a light breeze. We had high hopes for the day, but were cautiously optimistic.

Made a short run to our first spot. The tide was just bottoming out, and we could see clean weeds with clear patches all around. This area was sure to be a spawning flat.

After some pitches with the Senko and no bites, my father switched to a drop-shot and almost instantly got bit. He set the hook and his rod doubled over. A good five-pounder thumped on the deck (definitely set high expectations for the day with that fish).

Knowing the fish are most likely shallow, I switched to a frog. Working along weed edges seemed to be the most effective compared to working over the weeds. This yielded me my first frog fish of the year. Solid three-pounders seemed to like chomping the frog.

Around 11 is when the wind started to pick up, we switched tactics in favor of reaction baits. A craw colored crank worked well, but the spinnerbait seemed to consistently get the nicer fish.

For the remainder of the day, we worked our way to the Central Delta. The bite was very consistent on the weed flats near spawning grounds. We picked up lots of males when casting closer to shore, but backing a few yards off the same area and casting to the outside weeds got us the bigger females.

Overall, we ended the day with around 19 pounds for the best five. Fishing was consistent throughout the day, but when the wind picked up, the fishing was even better.

Senkos, Drop-shots, and frogs worked best when the wind was calm, but when it picked up, crankbaits and spinnerbaits did the rest of the damage.
