Northern California Lake Fishing Report

      Report: The bass fishing on New Melones has been a little hit and miss. Some days we are finding plenty of fish, along with some giants and other days we are working for each and every bite. Even on the tougher days we are averaging 15 to 20-fish. New Melones is a great fishery and it is not uncommon to catch 30 to 40-fish in a day.

      Changing techniques and adapting to the conditions has been a major key to our success. We were faced with another week of unstable weather, cold nights, a drizzle of rain and gusty winds. However, we made the proper adjustments and found some quality fish on each trip.
      The fish are at the tail end of their annual spawn and are in a post spawn stage. When the surface warms we have been finding topwater fish in the mornings and evenings. When it cools we went with a subsurface reaction presentation. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits and small swimbaits will put fish in the boat. The weather the next couple weeks looks like it will be fairly stable and the reaction bite will continue to produce.

      I had the pleasure of fishing with Rick Helmonds for a couple days. About an hour into the first day of our guide trip Rick stuck a giant 6.2-pound largemouth. We were targeting an area that would hold both spawn and post spawn fish. This beauty inhaled a swimbait in shallow water.

      Tips: Go fishing in the early morning and evenings to avoid the heat. Rovers and Ploppers are pulling fish to the surface for some exciting topwater action.

      Report: I had the pleasure of taking a husband/wife team from Florida to our beautiful Bullards Bar! Florida with its 3 to 5 foot water they fish - Bullards was probably a shock to them when my Lowrance would often read over 300 feet!!! A new world in California! The fishing was fair since the lake continues to rise - now about 97% full. All the cover (trees and brush) are now under water, so most fishing is on visible structure - points, walls, etc. She fished for awhile and then most enjoyed the beautiful scenery. Bullards is a beautiful lake when full!!! He fished hard and caught a bunch of spots up to 2 lbs but never hooked a big one. Very few boats on the water. The dinks are showing up now but the bite is still slow.

      Tips: I think the bite will gradually slide into the summer pattern - lots of dinks with an occasional large spot. The June post-spawn bite can be pretty good on crankbaits and swimbaits, but will probably be tougher because of the high water that will be with us for awhile. Dropping Senkos around the flooded brush and trees should work pretty well this summer!!

      Report: I had another guide trip on Wed at Clear Lake and found the fishing to be better than my last few trips. The bite started slow but got goin' around 11 am. She brought some of her own equipment and baits. In addition to over 20 bass, we caught 2 bluegill (again!) and 2 crappie. We caught bass a little deeper this trip, down to 20 feet. Robo worms, Senkos, and Flappin' hogs worked best on this trip. We just stayed in the south end, fishing off-shore rock and a few docks.

      Tips: It seems that most of the bass have moved off the bank by now. I think a good post-spawn bite should start soon and maybe last thru June - if - we ever get some normal weather! Starting to see some floating cover now down south. Topwater and frogs around the corner??

      Report: Went out this past Friday it was windy but a beautiful sunny day. It was too windy for me in the main lake but I tucked myself into a cove by the Monticello Ski School and fished there the whole time I was out. I fished Senkos Texas rigged and wacky rigged and drop shot Robo worms (color: morning glory) covered in Procure scent (night crawler and garlic craw dad ). I let two bass go that still had eggs one weighed over eight pounds and the other over ten pounds. Ended up with a nice limit one weighing in at 5 pounds 6 ounces (see photo). The lake is clearing up but only saw a few beds. Top water should be happening soon. 'til next time..............................good fishing!!!!!!

      Tips: lots of water ,all baits are working this past week..you have only to find the fish.they are hungry but if your bait does not work switch to a bait that does.a couple fish on top water a couple on spinners a few on cranks but the balance on plastics.

      Report: Got launched about 6am at Lime Saddle, stopped fishing right at 10:15am. Today, one of the rare days without blowing winds this morning, dead calm, kind of spooky! Water cooled a lot, down to 62-64 all the places I fished. Bite was good, but not as good as my last trip, caught 29 spots, 2 at 14 1/2", with most around the 13" range and 1 dink about 6". Surprised, water dropping lots, down 14.07 feet from my trip last week. Think they are running the lake in the scared mode still, letting out twice the water coming in. Seems they never consider spawn when dumping water the way they are. Can't figure out why they do this, the way they do. Wood cleaned up a lot, hardly any but a few logs still floating around, be careful. Pictures in fishing forum.

      Report: Man the bite has gone soft...still managed 31 with most in the 1-2.5 range. Biggest of the day was 4.5lbs. The wind was kicking our butts all day but stayed north all day so we avoided it as best as we could. Caught them on dropshot, jigs and crankbaits. Most of the fish are sitting in shallow cover. Didnt catch too many away from cover. Most bites came within a few feet of any exposed structure. Clear Lake is in dyer need of a string of hot days not followed by a massive cold front bringing rain and windy. The Bass have been banged around by this weather and most are still well in the spawn. The weather looks promising the next couple weeks so fingers crossed.

      Tips: Stay North and fish slow

      Report: Went out this past Friday it was windy but a beautiful sunny day.       Striper Trolling and plug casting has stayed fair the last few days. Dirty “D” is a bit Windy this week. Trolling the Angry Eyes and Savage Preys is the best bet. Sturgeon anglers moved West . Catfish start to show in better numbers with Mackerel.

      Rio Vista Fishing Report

      WINDY, but forecast to improve later this weekend. Shore bound anglers are scoring both species. The best place to score a striped bass or sturgeon remains Sandy Beach and the area of the Power Lines, use Sardines or Shad. Trolling is scoring many limits stripers and occasionally, a 10-12 pounder caught. Savage Prey and P-line Angry Eye lures are key for the trolling anglers.

      Walnut Grove Fishing Report

      Trolling Savage Prey baits colors 8 to 10 foot deep is key as the spring push continues. The Dirty “D” is clearing its name and conditions are improving for Black Bass in the area. Spinnerbaits and Fizzle jigs are working in the Hog Area. Bank anglers tossing shad and Sardines prevail for an occasional Striper those looking for bigger bites. Drifting live baits for stripers cracking the 10 pound plus keeps anglers smiling..

      Central Delta Fishing Report

      Most Blackie anglers are sticking with Strike King Blade minnows paired with Fatsack Swim Jigs. Wind and overcast this weekend slow rolling Fatsack Tackle blades and Strike King square bills searching ledges near sparse tulle flats. Stripers had another cameo appearance this week yet it was very brief. Crappie and Bluegill also had a improvement this week.

      Frank’s Tract Fishing Report

      After being beat up by crazy winds for a week, we got a third round of winds. Black bass bite is at a consistent tougher than normal bite. Hematoma Beavers on over cast days also working well. We are seeing a few big Black Bass with ¾ ounce Jigs. Others looking to score are starting to crank DDO Customs and Big Poppa’s are solid options.

      West Delta Fishing Report

      Bundle up and braving the wind is worth trying. The stripers are here anchovies and sardines in many areas for bank anglers, Antioch Pier and along Sherman Island rd. Stripes to 28 pounds have grabbed baits . Trollers it’s getting started on both sides with Red Barn being the top choice, if they aren’t there move to the Eddo’s Side. Chartreuse patterns are the best bet.

      Contra Loma Fishing Report

      One of the best local bets! Try fishing for catfish at Channel Point, Loma Island or from a boat with nightcrawlers or chicken liver. Trout are biting on nightcrawlers at Channel Point, near the swim area, or from a boat. Black bass fishing has been good again this week, biting on artificial baits/lures or nightcrawlers anywhere around the lake. Try fishing for crappie or bluegill with jigs or worms at the boat ramp area, Loma Island or Channel Point area.

      Los Vaqueros Fishing Report

      The Best bet is fishing for trout with all the trout plants and cool water temperatures. They are being caught in South Cove and Oak Point as well as Peninsula Cove. The baits of choice for shore anglers is garlic scented PowerBaits, nightcrawlers or Kastmasters. Trout average a pound and a half but range to over 5 lbs. Light tackle is important for catching trout with 4-6 pound test being plenty.

      Del Valle Fishing Report

      Trout is OK, most anglers are catching them on either garlic or colored Power Bait or nightcrawlers. Staff would also recommend using small spinners or smaller jerk baits, Lucky Craft, or yo zuri. Anglers have been catching trout in the deeper waters, as the fish are staying down at depths of 15-20 feet. Black bass are hitting pretty good. Find fallen trees, weed beds or the tulle patches. We would recommend throwing either a weedless senko or artificial crawdads on a ½- to a 1-oz football jighead. Anglers are also catching them on shallow to mid running crank baits.

      Report: Hi all... I have been out multiple times in the last few weeks. It has been quite the adventure to say the least. The fish are spawning all over the river.... some places have crystal clear water, most places have very dirty water. (Which I believe is from all the farms moving water in and out ??? Can anyone confirm that ??) Well anyways, I am catching some quality fish on northeast side of the river. Where ever I can find decent visibility seems to produce well, plus I can see what I'm targeting. Try topwater early, then go with your top 5 go-getters....good luck and have FUN !!!

      Tips: Avoid the crowd if you can....FLW everywhere....

      Report: I had 2 guide trips - Tues and Wed - with typical Clear lake weather. Tues was very warm and the lake was FLAT most of the day. Wed the cold front came in with south winds and lots of white caps!! And we wonder why the fishing has been "interesting" this year? Tuesday my client did well, landing several bass in the 2 1/2 to 3 1/4 lb range. Could not find any willing larger bass. All the bigger bass my friend and I caught last week were no where to be found this week. Wed I took a fellow who just got off the plane from Japan to fish with my previous client who now lives in the bay area but is also from Japan. They had a nice trip and caught everything including 2 bluegill, crappie, several bass up to 2 1/4 lbs and the battle of all battles - landing a 15+ lb catfish on ultra-light tackle! I took a nap while he was fighting her - LOL!! It took him about a minute a pound to land her - about 14-15 minutes. That was something to watch!! Actually he did a great job to land her and was a happy camper!! A little earlier on the same rocky area, I was able to put a 5.1 lb bass in the boat. The wind made fishing difficult and slowed the bite a lot. Tues, we saw small bass and panfish everywhere around the lake. Wed we could not see any of those fish as they were all tucked in shallow cover.

      Tips: I cannot give any tips on the baits my clients used as they were totally self-contained with their Japanese baits and ultra-light outfits. The great thing is that if they were making fun of my Robo worms, I couldn't understand them, They spoke Japanese all day! They were both great casters and worked their baits very effectively! Tuesday we had a lot of success on Robo worms but I am too embarrassed to tell you what color - yet! More on the water tests! Senkos worked as usual. Tuesday we both lost a big bass - not sure why. I was sorry that the south end wasn't any better. The better days may be just ahead - or - many of the southern bass have been moved to the north. Naw, that wouldn't happen.

      Report: Got launched about 6am, stopped fishing at 15:15am when the breeze got to blowing. Awesome bite, wide open bite for anyone who wants to go fishing now. Active fish nearly every location I fished with most locations giving up 4-6 fish, one location gave up 7 fish. Decent size fish for the most part. Got 43 fish today, largest right at 15 1/2", two at 15", 3-4 in the 14 1/2" range, with all others 13-14" and only two dinks today. Lost 2 decent fish that had that 15" range plus feel. Hot fishing, so get out on the lake while the bite is on. Fish ranged from 15 foot range to 30-35 foot range, most in the 20-25 foot mark. Water now 67-68 degrees. Pictures in fishing forum.

      Report: First time ever fishing Clearlake May 1 to 4. The guy's at Clearlake Bait & Tackle said the bass bite was very slow and recommended fishing for crappie as they're biting very well. We did spend some time fishing for bass, caught a few 4.5 lb bass and one 10 lb bass on live minnows. I threw lots of keitech swimbaits and only caught a few 8" bass. All our bass were in the konocti bay. Others were saying there are fish on beds on the north but they weren't more specific. We threw the small keitech easy shiners in electric shad and couldn't keep the crappie off our hooks. Average size for crappie 1.2 lbs. Crappie are biting pretty much everywhere on the lake. There are lots of shad right now as well so not sure if that is whats slowing down the bite or not. Good luck and tight lines!

      Report: A friend and I fished the lake from 5:30 pm 'til about 11 pm. We did well in the lake afternoon, catching bass from 3 inches to 5 1/2 lbs - and my 4" bluegill that took a Robo worm. We did see a huge bass - maybe 10 lb class - and the 4 lb male on a bed. He caught the male! We put together a 20 lb limit and maybe 30 bass total. As evening came, the famous flying Clear Lake gnats made their first summer appearance for us. I don't think I have ever seen as much surface activity at Clear Lake as I saw until dark. Fish of all sizes were on the surface feeding on the gnats and maybe some baitfish. You see that type of feeding at other lakes, but not so much at Clear Lake. It was happening on-shore and off-shore! After dark, the bite totally died - nothing. We left!!

      Tips: We fished many of our favorite areas of the south end. Rocky areas and tulle lines held bass of all sizes. All bass were caught in the top 10 feet of water. Areas that were protected from the north winds were the best. It was a special day as the wind was from 0 to 5 mph. Yes, it does happen once in awhile!! Senkos, Yamamaoto Flappin' hogs, and beaver type baits seemed to work the best. We tried to fish afternoon shadows as much as possible, so no sight fishing. Lake level is still very high, around 7 1/4 to 7 1/2 feet. Did not see any debris on the water.

      Report: Launched at Lime Saddle about 6:30am, stopped fishing right at 10am. Water warmed a bunch since last trip, high of 62.9 degrees, found it's helping the fish be in the mood to bite and beginning to school up some. Fished Lime saddle are out to hwy 70. Caught 19 spots today, largest right at 15 1/2", a couple 14 1/2" with the rest basic 13-13 1/2", and just one dink today. One location gave up 5 fish, one right after the other. Fish ranged from 15 to 35 feet, most in the 20-25 foot range. Still lots of wood, so be careful. Should be good fishing days for all now. Pictures in fishing forum.

      Report: Fished the lake for four days with a few of the Tri Valley Bassmaster boys. Caught a lot of fish. About 40 fish per person per day. Nothing over three pounds. All the usual baits worked well with best baits being a clear black flake single tail grub, and a dark multi color jig. Pit river arm near floating wood or submerged trees were best spots, caught plenty on the other arms also.

      Tips: THERE IS A LOT OF BIG FLOATING LUMBER!!!! Be very careful, you can't help but hit some. Several south side ramps were full of lumber making them inaccessible. Also several windows were smashed and trucks broken into at the Jones Valley ramp.

      Report: Went out with my pal Albert before my trip to Miami and caught a nice limit of bass best five weighed in at 15 pounds 6 ounces. There will be another spawn on the full moon on May 10th. Had a great time fishing with my nieces and nephews salt water and fresh water both. We charted a boat from My Girls Charters who specialize in family fishing trips and they did a great job. Looking forward to fishing this weekend at the lake and hope to have a good report for you 'til next time.........................good fishing!!!!!!

      Report: The 50 MPH wind Friday and the weekend boat traffic muddied up the lake. I was not surprised it was a slow day for us (and the others we talked to). Tried an array of plastics with no luck. Ended up catching some spots on Bright colored Cranks. Found them in the back of coves chasing bait. Could not believe how warm the water was with prior cool weather we had. It was nice to see the Glory Hole is still flowing thought!

      Bank anglers tossing shad and Sardines prevail for an occasional Striper those looking for bigger bites. Drifting live baits for stripers cracking the 10 pound plus keeps anglers smiling. Trolling Savage Prey baits colors 8 to 10 foot deep is key as the spring push continues. The Dirty “D” is clearing its name and conditions are improving for Black Bass in the area. Spinnerbaits and Fizzle jigs are working in the Hog Area.

      Discovery Bay Fishing Report

      Larger Stripers started to show a bit this past week . Crappie and Bluegill also had a improvement this week. Most Blackie anglers are sticking with Senkos and Tail Slapper swim baits paired with Fatsack Swim Jigs, Wind and overcast this weekend slow rolling Fatsack Tackle blades and Strike King square bills searching ledges near sparse tulle flats.

      Frank’s Tract Fishing Report

      After being beat up by crazy winds for a week. Black bass bite is at a consistent. Hematoma Beavers on over cast days also working well. We are seeing a few Stripers and Black Bass with top water and Chili Craw Red Eye Shad.Others looking to score are starting to crank Chartreuse Shad 6th Sense baits and Big Poppa’s are solid options. Keeper sized stripes are grabbing Bubba Shad a bit more this week and trolled Angry Eye baits.

      West Delta Fishing Report

      The stripers are here anchovies and sardines in many areas for bank anglers, Antioch Pier and along Sherman Island rd. Stripes to 28 pounds have grabbed baits . Trollers it’s getting started on both sides with Red Barn being the top choice, if they aren’t there move to the Eddo’s Side. Chartreuse patterns are the best bet.

      Contra Loma Fishing Report

      Too many bank walkers popping Bass to 8 pounds off the beds, Please release them! Black bass have been biting on Senko’s and nightcrawlers around the lake. Try a AC Minnow wake bait or a Savage Trout fishing is still consistent on the east side, north side of lake or from a boat with nightcrawlers, Power Eggs, or mice tails.

      Los Vaqueros Fishing Report

      Trout continues to be best bet. They are being caught in South Cove and Oak Point as well as Cowboy Cove. The baits of choice for shore anglers is garlic scented PowerBaits, nightcrawlers or Kastmasters. Trout average a pound and a half but range to over 5 lbs. Light tackle is important for catching trout with 4-6 pound test being plenty. There was a 1000 lb DFW plant on the way. There was also a 1000 lb Lassen plant this week. With the continuing plants, trout fishing has been holding steady with more limits being caught from all around the reservoir.

      Del Valle Fishing Report

      Black Bass are on fire with anglers reporting having caught and released up to 12 bass. Most are smaller and in shallow water creating their beds. Best bet is still Senkos, either wacky or Texas rigged. Also try a plastic crawdad, on either a half-ounce, or a one-ounce football jig head. If you do catch a bass, please release it, as she maybe pregnant. Trout have been active this last week. They have been in the shallow water; anglers are having good luck on Power Bait, nightcrawlers, Rapalas, mice tails and Kastmasters. Many anglers have reported catching their limits.
