Report: Talk about Hot!! hottest day on the lake all year. Way too hot to be fishing for me, and for many others! Launched about 5:30am, off the lake and on the top of the ramp at 10am, and it's hot! Warm water, but still fish to be caught, small ones mostly. Caught just 13 fish, in the west branch, mostly because the wind was going strong and didn't feel like having a battle with wind. All spots 12-13", but had one surprise, got a 2-3 pound catfish as soon as the roboworm hit bottom, must have dropped it on it's head, and for just a second thought I had a nice spot, then the typical catfish action. Also looked up at the right moment about 35 feet away, to see an eagle pick a small 10" fish off the lake surface a fly away, first for me. Guess I'm going to have to fish ultra deep next trip and try to find those 15" or better fish! Water 76-78 degrees! The lake is back to dropping about a foot a day now, as of today, 30.79 feet down from high water mark of the year. Picture in fishing forum

      Report: Fishing with Sid‏
      10:57 AM

To: Fishing with Sid, lake b Peter Kilkus new

Summer is definitely here and the weather is HOT! I took Harry, Paul and Owen out for the day. Owen started the day by catching two bass in the shade against a rock wall we were trolling in approximately 15 to 18 feet of water and he was using a silver and blue crank bait which dove about 8 to 10 feet. Since we were in the shade I decided to fish the point for awhile using three different methods, a drop shot, a Carolina rig and a weightless senko worm. We tried our best but no bites and so we moved on. Next stop was a cove where I had a lot of success landing good size bass. Harry landed a nice 2+ pound crappie. The whole cove was full of minnows they were everywhere and we watched the bass feeding on this banquet for over an hour. We finished the day off in deep water where we went swimming to cool off before heading in (see photos). Looking forward to the July 4th weekend and wishing everyone a safe and happy one.
      'til next time....................................................................................................good fishing!!!!!!!

    • Report: Clear Lake this week 6/28/2016

Lake level is 5.24 Rumsey and water temps are 70-85 degrees depending on time of day.

Finally, a more consistent bite is beginning to greet anglers this week, and one will be rewarded for weeding through the shorts. Trust me, stick with it and you will be rewarded.

Whether you choose to power fish, or finesse em’, one has to be willing to wade through the smaller fish in order to put a good sack together. Basically, for the first time this year one say the pattern is about normal for the time of year. Yep, “summertime” pattern.
Chase em’ on top early, cover water mid-morning, and hit the shade in the afternoons.

Early morning a buzz bait, spook, or whopper plopper should raise some interest, and mid-mornings the chatterbait, crankbait bite is now going pretty good, as is a Carolina rigged brush hog. Once the sun gets up and there are shade lines, the drop-shop, nail rig, and senko begin to takeover.

Whereas up to now it’s been hit and miss depending on the day, the bite is really beginning to improve as was expected. Just be prepared for the heat, it can be quite stifling.

Top colors this past week? Watermelon candy, MMIII, Aarons Madness, Yamamoto’s 330, 301, 926, and PBJ. Oh, minnows are back in stock at Clear Lake Bait & Tackle. I suggest you call ahead and reserve yours as they will go fast over the holiday.

In closing, again please wear your PFD at all times. We unfortunately lost yet another angler this past week. Even one drowning is too many. This one unfortunately makes four in the past month alone here on Clear Lake.

    • Water Temp: 77-79

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: FINALLY - a night guide trip!! And a good one at that!!! I took a father from Louisiana and his son who just moved to California for a late afternoon/night trip. The trip started slow with a few before dark and 3 topwater hits with none landed. After dark, we experienced one of the quietest nights I have ever seen at Berryessa, Not a SINGLE fish sound, NO bird sounds, No wind, deathly quiet!! Not normal. Even when the moon rose - no change. BUT - the bass did start to feed and they just hooked bass after bass!! First night bass, first California bass, and first spotted bass!! The dad's first Spotted bass was a dandy - 3 lbs 9 oz!! He will take that memory back home - what a fight!! They caught over 25 bass - I lost count! Only 2 undersize. Their limit was about 15+ lbs. No toads this trip. We mostly used the usual 7" Berkley Power worms - the favorite night bait at Berryessa!!

Tips: We only found one area that was "hot!' Bass were scattered all over. One point did have a lot of quality largemouth on it. Finally, some spotted bass - I think they caught three, including the big one. I had a day trip mid-week that was really slow - not the fault of the clients. The first really hot day with dead flat water - very tough! We had a one hour breeze about 10 am and the bite was pretty good - after that, very tough!!

    • Report: Delta Report…Great Weather for #FishOakley as Pro-Am Anglers from throughout California head to Russo’s for the CTT Tournament Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Isleton Fun times as Smallies are grabbing baits throughout the area. Craw patterns are key. Summer night pattern prevails for bait tossing anglers. Catfish start to show in better numbers with Mackerel. Sardines and livers are the best bets for whisker fish. Striper Trolling and plug casting has been Improving the last few days. Trolling the Angry Eyes and Savage Preys is the best bet.

Rio Vista- Warm seasonable weather ahead finally for anglers, and forecast to stay stable. Shore bound anglers are scoring both . The best place to score a striped bass or Whisker fish remains Three Mile and the area of the Power Lines, use Sardines or Shad. Trolling is still scoring many limits stripers and occasionally, a 10-12 pounder caught. Savage Prey and P-line Angry Eye lures are key for the trolling anglers.

Walnut Grove North Delta Black and Smallmouth Bass in the area are a biting. Spinnerbaits and Swim jigs are working in the Hogback and Steamboat Areas. Bank anglers tossing Anchovies and Sardines prevail for an occasional Striper and nice catfish. Those looking for bigger bites try drifting live baits for stripers cracking the 10 pound plus keeps anglers smiling.

Central Delta A few anglers are still scoring schoolie sized stripers in the Indian Creek side. Crankbaits are scoring bass on the main runway rock walls. Bass pushing the 4 to 6 mark are showing on occasion. While the winds have hampered there search a bit those targeting shaded current areas. Fatsack Tackle punch shirts and Gambler Plastics are great under utilized choices. With the wind Spinnerbaits and buzzbaits also are getting bit. Jig bite on points is also decent!

Frank’s Tract Black bass bite is at a consistent yet, tougher than normal bite. While last week the talk was of Better post spawn fish swallowing the Big Worm. Many are sticking Bullworms and Yamamoto Senko’s paired with Tsuyoi Wacky Hooks. We are seeing a few big Black Bass with ¾ ounce Jigs. Others looking to score are starting to Toss DDO Fat Bluegill.

West Delta Anglers in search of stripers are finding the bite to be tough but still those who stick with it are getting small keepers on occasion from both boat and bank. From as far west as Honker Bay to the Broad Slough and Antioch pier persistent bait dunkers with Anchovies and Sardines ae finding fun action. Sturgeon success has come on the outgoing tide with pile worms, eel and roe. Broad Slough, Bouy 1 and Pittsburg PG&E are good bets. Not great by any means but a fun way to spend the Hot summer evenings.

Contra Loma –Try fishing for catfish at Channel Point, Loma Island or from a boat with nightcrawlers or chicken liver. Trout are biting on nightcrawlers at Channel Point, near the swim area, or from a boat. There was another Trout Plant last Monday. Try fishing for crappie or bluegill with jigs or worms at the boat ramp area, Loma Island or Channel Point area.

Los Vaqueros Wind has been brutal at times. The Best bet is fishing with cut baits with all the hungry small stripers around. Trout are a bit slower but still caught in South Cove and Oak Point as well as Peninsula Cove. The baits of choice for shore anglers is garlic scented PowerBaits, nightcrawlers or Kastmasters. Trout average a pound and a half but range to over 5 lbs. Light tackle is important for catching trout with 4-6 pound test being plenty. With the continuing plants, trout fishing has been ok with some limits being caught from all around the reservoir.

    • Report: Clear Lake this week 6/22/2016

Interesting, this week we find the lake level has come up a bit and now rests at 5.50 Rumsey.

What is Rumsey? Click here: http://www.westernbass.com/shared/mag_w ... index.html

Water conditions continue to decline and yes, most of the lake is now green. However, as most anglers let this phenomena stop them from coming to Clear Lake in the summer, some realize it has little to nothing to do with catching fish, and in most cases can actually help the bite. This is actually the case as of this writing. The bite continues to improve despite the algae bloom.

This week it appears that the fish are actually beginning to chase in earnest, and as this full moon decreases, that will most likely continue to be the case, and should actually continue to improve.

Buzzbaits, Ploppers, Frogs, Chatterbaits, Dropshots, and Jigs topped the list this week.

Where? Most any of the flats, or deeper set of docks is holding good numbers of fish coming out of post spawn, as is most if not all of the tule lines.

How? The topwater bite up north can be stellar if you can find the fish that are on the shad. Same with the Whopper Plopper and Chatterbait. As for the Frog, I have been focusing on the shaded tule lines once the sun is up, and there are definitely more than a few fish willing. The Dropshot is working under and around deeper docks, and the jig is cleaning up on the deeper ledges.

Get out early and chase em’ till noon, take break and hit em’ again in the evening. There are some good ones starting to show themselves. Be patient and weed through the lil guys and most will eventually get a shot at a good one.

Please remember, unless you’re in a tournament now is not the time to be holding fish in a livewell. With the low oxygen content, and high water temps, it is imperative that we practice Catch, Photo, and Release, and if you do happen to be in a tourney, even a six hour club event, please use ice and leave your livewells on for the duration, it can make all the difference....;)

First point found fish at 30-35 feet and they were hungry, managed to land 10 fish off this point in about an hour. Working just a 30 foot wide section. Never found another school, just one or two fish here and their the rest of the trip. Landed 21 fish, All fish 12-13" with none under 12" (dinks) this trip. Water coming down, beginning to look naked on the banks. We have dropped 20.5 feet since the high water mark of the year.

You should have no trouble catching a lot of bass in the early morning. Problem is - they are mostly 6 to 12 inchers. You might get into a bigger bass if you work the steep drop-offs and points. Also, drop Senkos next to the off-shore trees. That might be your best bet for a quality spotted bass!

Pier anglers still getting some GOOD sized stripers and occasional sturgeon. Trollers it’s ok getting started on both sides with Montezuma and Red Barn being the top choice, if they aren’t there move to the Eddo’s Side. Chartreuse patterns are the best bet.

    • Report: Clear Lake this week 6/15/2016

Current conditions find flows out of Cache Creek Dam have increased and the lake level with the accompanied high winds have dropped the lake level to 5.74 Rumsey. Water condition continues to be better than average and surface temps have dropped to the low to mid 70’s.

We currently have a rising moon and as it reaches full moon status the bite has slowed in the early morning with mid-morning beginning to share the primetime title. That said, there is a bit of a first light topwater bite, here and there. As the sun rises early and into the afternoon, the chatterbait bite is beginning to kick in in earnest, as is the jig bite (finally).

Now is the time of year that holds a ton of potential with post spawners beginning to get on the shad, and when you find em’ it’s on!

Buzzbaits, Whopper Ploppers, Spooks, and Frogs will get em on top, and the chatterbait-jig bite will fill your afternoons. Move around and watch closely. Target submerged weed areas and hard edges, anywhere the fish can pin the bait and you’ll usually find them.

I would concentrate my morning efforts up north, and move to the mid-south end as the day progresses.

For those who have inquired about the minnow bite. Well, there aren’t any minnows, and the tackle shops say they will not have another delivery until after the 1st of July. That may also be why the crappie bite has been reported as slow as well?

Either way, the fishing is still better than average so take advantage of the cooler temps and get after em’!

On a side note, be aware that Limit Out Tackle in the Oaks is now CLOSED Monday thru Wednesday, so plan accordingly.

Could not find any decent fish today but did find plenty of small fish. All fish went from 11-13" today, and even a few 9-10" fish. Fished deep, shallow, mid levels and no large size fish, like they all went on vacation today. Managed 23 fish, best right about 13". Thought today would have been great with the cloud cover, but not for good fish. Better luck next week. Picture in fishing forum.

    • Water Temp: 75-80

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: I had another good trip Tues with a father/son pair of anglers. There was a slight breeze in the morning and a bit of high fog. The cooling trend was on its way! It burned off quickly and the bite started - with mostly smaller bass on Robo worms and topwater. After fishing Wragg Canyon, we moved out to the main body and worked walls and offshore structure. Dad showed us how it's done with his 4 lb 14 oz largemouth, caught on a morning dawn Robo worm. The bite again was best around noon, but didn't last as long as previous trips because of the wind that got pretty serious after 1 pm. Both father and son did very well catching lots of bass over 2 1/2 lbs - again - mostly largemouth with a few 2 3/4 lb smallies! One decent spotted bass. Their limit of 5 was around 16 1/4 lbs.

Tips: The worm bite has been so good, as it was last year early in the summer, we used them most of the trip as bigger bass were eating them! No reason to waste time doing other stuff. The quality bass had moved a little deeper than previous trips and had positioned themselves a little differently. A few good areas that were holding bass were now vacant, so some movements are starting as the lake is beginning to drop, nearly 2 feet now. The main ramp at Markely was still open, but probably not for long.

    • Report: DanIsaac » Fri Jun 10, 2016 7:28 am

This week finds the lake level at 6.02 Rumsey, and with the water temp reaching nearly 85 degrees by mid-day, this bite is fickle at best, including the crappie...

We were hoping with some cooler overnight temperatures we just might see a topwater bite develop. Not! Well,
at least not anything to jump up and down about...Still if a guy doesn't mind flipping a slow falling plastic, he can still boat a decent limit.

For me the key has been finding cleaner water with tules....find tule lines with cleaner water and work em' extremely slow with a 5" Senko or Zoom swamp crawler wacky rigged. Yes, you will have to weed through the 12-13" lil buggers, but stick with it and the better bites will come, and don't be surprised by a really good bite here and there as there are some really big cruisers working those tule edges.

This past week we worked this very pattern, and it produced a 26, and 29 lb limit on back to back days, so while it's not a glamorous technique, it is continuing to produce this week as well from all reports.

      Personally, I use 12-14 fluorocarbon, a 2/0 Mustad J-Hook, and a 926 Yamamoto 5" senko. When tossing a finesse worm
I use a Zoom Swap Crawler, with a small nail, wacky rigged with the same set-up. Does the color really make a difference? Actually, yes, right now they are biting the darker shades over lighter shades. Why? I have no idea, but I'm certainly not going to argue! We must have thrown 30 different colors at em' the other day, and the darker laminate shades out produced lighter shades 2 to 1......go figure.....

Have fun and be aware Wild West is here with their Team TOC so you will have company. Lights on early and have fun!

Report: Launched at Lime Sadddle about 5:45am, surprised me, very light winds today. Bite way off from last week, no idea why, but no larger fish to be found this morning. Not many fish either, and the ones in the mood were small and dinks too. Managed just 17 fish today, largest right at 13 1/2" with most 12" to barely 13" and 4-5 dinks tossed in. Hard for me to find fish today, most fish where water was clean and clear, murky water had none for me. Picked up 3-4 fish at each location, just small ones!!! Forgot to mention last week, remember spots tend to school. Fished 3 locations last week and first location gave up all my large fish and about 20 fish before I moved on. Catch fish, stick with it and give it a chance, more are generally waiting.

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: Memorial Day weekend was perfect this year at the lake. The weather was glorious and the fishing GREAT!!!!! I went out every day and hit limits of bass using different methods but sticking mostly with a Carolina rig set up which was very productive for me. Sarah caught most of her fish trolling and landed a nice limit of bass and a 2.5 lb trout (see photos). Dan and I fished in Willie's ski school against the wall using drop shot method and within minutes he landed his first bass of the day and said "I never knew bass was so easy to catch." Bob is holding two bass a 4 pounder and a 2.5 pounder caught with a senko worm. It seems that any method we used in clear water worked well. Top water worked well in early morning. I'm looking forward to a successful summer fishing season. 'til next week..................good fishing!!!!!!!

Tips: I love pro cure scents, mostly crawdad for the worms and trout for the crankbaits love Hobie glasses to see the fish in shallow water plus more favorites that I believe when the fishing is tough makes a difference

    • Water Temp: 77

Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)

Report: Spent three hours out on a kayak by three mile slough, and had three nice bass (3, 6, and 4) on a white spro on low tide. The frog bite seemed to pick up on slack tide at the bottom, with about five blow ups. Only three took the frog. I also picked up a few clones on a senko. As the tide started to move in fishing started to slow, and I had to get off the water

Tips: White Spro and June Bug Senkos,
