Report: Guided two great ellas on Friday night. They were good ishermen. The hour beore dark eatured a beautiul sunset and the night was not as cold as a clear night can be and parts o the lake had no wind. Sounds perect!! Only one problem - no bite! I expect the night bite to improve when the lake temp inally drops, but I thought we would get into some with the cool nights we are having. Other than 1991, this continues to be the slowest night ishing year at Clear Lake in the past 20 years - at least or me. Clients and I did get 3 or 4 up to a pound and a hal along with a 2-13. Near the end o the trip, I did stick a large bass - maybe 6 pounds or so, but dumped it at the boat. It hit a large brush hog-like thing called a Hoo Daddy. At least we all had a great time and the clients learned a ew things about night ishing. The ish do win sometimes but the guide sure eels like a loser!
    City: Yuba City

Tips: I think all the bait is causing a day bite and creating conditions or suspended ish at night. Interesting to me again - slow night bite along with no carp activity. Crankbaits have worked in the past at night, but not Friday night.

Report: Fished riday 10/18 preishing or our club tournament. Had my best day ever on clear lake. Largest 7.5 lbs on a ire tiger speedtrap. Had two over 6 on salt and pepper grubs. These ish were on docks in deep water. Buzzed one o a rock pile 4.5 and had a 6 on a gitzit pitched to docks on rattlesnake. My irst over 30 lb limit. O course the day o the tournament I could only ind 2 over 13 inches with lots o small ones. Sunday decided to trow a rattletrap. Good idea. My partner and I each weighed a limit o small keepers. The only ones weighted in sunday. The rattletrap bite was still going on wed and thurs because I took my wie marian back to clear lake. I didn't catch anything over 4 lbs but lots o 2s. I you could get out o the wind you could still get some salt and pepper grub ish.Funny but the windier it got the better the rattletrap got. Tried a blade some and never got bit? Had a great 2 days one the lake with the wie. The winner in our bass club, bass classics was javier cruz who boated 4 ish in 2 days. They were dandies. Most o his good ish were on blades.

Tips: Wind throw rattletraps. No wind throw salt and pepper 5 inch grubs to deep docks with wooden piers only.Hula grubs on rocky points 1/4 oz heads. Worms in natural colors. Buzz rock piles. Slow down and enjoy the big ones.

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: I guided three clients Wed night, getting a late start at 7:30 PM. Since Clear Lake is much tougher in the all these days, I knew we would have to work hard or some quality bass. The north wind shited to a south wind, so we had to switch plans to get out o the wind. The plan was to ind docks and walls that would give us shadows ater midnight. Ater catching a ew up to 1 1/2 pounds, we decided to ish shadows at Henderson Point. Shag Rock was dead as it usually is now - not many bass let in that area since they are all swimming at tournament release areas. Anybody ever seen a release boat at Shag Rock? Anyway, Henderson made us all happy at the end o the trip as one client stuck a 4 pounder. About 40 minutes later, I saw one o the lines move in the black light and was about to yell something when one o the guys sets up on a good one. I love to see that lourescent line zig-zag in the black light!!!! I was able to net a real at bass or my now avorite client - 7 pounds 11 ounces!! This bass was thick! Both were caught on junebug Dead Ringer 8" worms in about 10 eet o water. Only two quality bass on this trip, but very rewarding near the end o the trip. Another personal best or a client - I love it!
    City: Yuba City

Tips: I think the jury is still out on how this year will are compared to previous years at Clear Lake. The quality bass have moved more this year than any I can remember. I think most are so ar o-shore to get away rom pressure that they don't return to their normal night eeding areas. The next month or two will tell the tale. The worm bite is still better than the jig bite - at least in my boat!

Report: My partner Terry DeVincenzi and I ished the Western Bass Future Pro on Clear Lake. We heard the bite was tough with a lot o small ish being taken. So we made up our minds to just go out and have a good time, we never even went ull speed in the boat. We ished a small creek in the Southern end o the lake and went real slow. We lipped every little piece o cover completely. Terry started the day nicely by tagging a 6.3lber (continuing his streak o absolutely smoking me or big ish honors) on a Senko coreshot. We then got a couple o 3lbers on a splitshot in the middle o the creek and lipped another 2lber on a Senko. We ished our way out and near the mouth we got our last ish o the day (at 11:00am no less) a nice 3+ on a rog. We ished the docks around Konocti to try to ill our limit but could not catch any more keepers, we were bummed on the way in. We ended up with 5 (limit was 7) or 17lbs, the 6.3 was 3rd or big ish and 17lbs was enough or the victory. Thanks again to my partner or the consistent big ish production.
    City: San Jose

Tips: I have only ished Clear Lake 3 times all in tournies. irst time I zeroed or 2 days. The last time (earlier this year) was a tourney win in the Future Pro, and this time. Go igure. Thank God or the posts and all the ino provided on how to ish this lake. Without it we would not have done as well I think.

Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)

Report: I took two riends to Clear Lake yeaterday and ound the ishing very tough. They caught 15 to 20 bass, mostly on worms and Senkos. They were mostly the 12 inch type but 2 o them were pushing 1 1/2 to 2 pounds. The number o boats on the lake was very unortunate I thought - bass ishing will be very tough or most. I did have an experience similar to the one Jimmy Reese had last Sunday. While his 9 1/4 was caught very shallow, I caught one totally unexpectedly in deep water at 1:45 PM - go igure! We were near the end o our trip, but I threw a #222 5 inch Senko into some shade on a deep dock. It takes a lot o patience to ish that bait real deep, but somewhere during the all a bass picked it up. As I looked at my line, it wasn't where I thought it should be. I slowly lited and set the hook. In three minutes my dumpy attitude about Clear Lake changed as my "10" was netted. It had to be "10". It wasn't - she was 2 big crawdads short - 9 lb 7 oz! Not a spot or hook mark on her. What a ish!! Moral o the story - never give up at Clear Lake! You never know!!!
    City: Yuba City

Tips: I like the #222 color Senko in green water because o the bright leck on the bait. I do think they can see it better. I think I will keep my "dock" quiet or the time being, but I will mention where I caught her in the near uture.

Report: Today I caught the biggest bass o my lie, It weighed 10 pounds even. I was ishing near Rattlesnake Island, and I looked up as a nice looking Ranger bass boat was going by.Then the next thing I knew, I was almost pulled into the water. I got the ish to the boat and realized that my net looked to small. But, luckily, I was able to to land the monster. I was shaking so bad that I couldn't get my new digital scale to work, so I put him in the live well and drove over to the guy in the Ranger boat. He weighed the ish or me and took some pictures. He said that he was a tournament pro and told me about another good spot to ish. I released the ish and went to the recommended spot and caught a 4.2 and a 1.4 lbs and other small ones. I would like to thank the guy in the Ranger boat. He told me his name, but I was so stunned that I orgot it. I would like to know your name, so i you read this report, please email me.

Report: My doctor gave me the inal "all clear" Friday ater my surgery and and soon-to-ollow sta inection. Lots o prayer rom riends, a loving wie, and ollowing doctors orders got me back in the saddle - er, Ranger boat seat Friday night and Saturday, doing what I love best - guiding 16 out o 22 hours. Yea, right!! I elt so thankul to be able to do what not many get to do (maybe because they are smarter!) - spend a gorgeous moonlit night on Clear Lake without a bass boat in sight, and a ew hours later ish on what seems to be another planet - Saturday on Clear Lake in the all tournament season which really resembles a zoo or bass boats and anything else that loats, yes, and including a seaplane coming out o the keys!! What a contrast!!! I had two pairs o wonderul young guys - good isherman - wanting to learn more about Clear Lake and techniques or ishing night and day. I wish the ishing had been as beautiul Friday night as the weather. I ran into a tournament pro that you all know, beore I started, and he told me that the rog bite had died Friday. As ar as I was concerned, he was right. What a dierence a ew hundred tournament anglers make in a week. Ater showing my clients the type o areas I like to ish rogs, I'm sure they wern't too impressed - no blowups. Finally, about 6 PM, the guy throwing the chartreuse Snag Proo rog got a blowup and a 4 1/2 lb bass. Ater dark, we ished the south end, looking or all the shadows we could ind, with some success. They caught two more good bass, one o a spinnerbait and one on a Dead Ringer Worm, and many oot long powerhouses. The sad part was the loss o a huge bass on a crankbait by one o the clients. He didn't have it on long but what a ish! We were casting into the shadows o Jenson Point at the time. As we were going in, I showed them one o my "secret (I do have a ew) spots" and one o the guys sets into a dandy ater a ew casts, a 6-3 was in the boat. You don't end a trip any better than that!! We wound up with only 4 good ish and my dink 1 1/2 pounder - but that gave us a 17 pound limit. Saturday morning we started a new adventure, one that I usually try to avoid, teaching olks about bass ishing among hundreds (it seems) o other boats. We started with Senkos, cranks, and rogs around Rattlesnake with no success, and then went to a little "nook and cranny" o Rattlesnake that I like. As usual - no boats. When my clients stuck a 4-1 on a red shad Dead Ringer, I WAS a happy camper. I thought to mysel we would see how we did against the tournament anglers. What made it more un was that one o the guys keep calling his brother who was also ishing at the north end and they already had an 8 1/2. No pressure on the guide, o course!!!! We did have a bit o unintentional grandstanding as a tournament boat was pounding the shoreline near the narrows and we were ishing behind him (0shore) on a small rockpile and the guy sticks a 3 3/4 on the same worm! We quickly release it but it was too late. The tournament boat turned back towards us, maybe waiting or us to leave. We did. We actually only ished probably 6 hours, since we are metering and looking at so many spots. We wound up with the two worm ish, a Weapon jig bass that I caught at Rattlesnake which went 3 1/2 and a Senko ish or the other client at 2-10 and a smaller bass. We had a 15 pound bag plus an once or two. The brother beat us by 1 pound, but we would have been somewhere around 25th to 30th in the tournament. That was a real un day and the clients were very good ishermen, looking to become even better. I like that!!
    City: Yuba City

Tips: My carp-bass activity held up again Friday night. For some reason the carp were almost silent - we heard almost no carp rolling. And, so, not many bass rolling on our hooks, either! Saturday, our three biggest bass came on rocks and one other on a dock.

Report: Ater a three week or so absence rom Clear Lake 'cause o some minor surgury, I got to ish it again Tuesday aternoon-night with a really nice ather-son team who had two goals - learn how to rog ish and do some quality night ishing. They had arrived Monday and ished the north end - had a lot o blowups, but no ish. As we started about 4:30 PM, I saw the problem. They were ishing them ar too ast. I gave the college-age son my personal lucky green Snag Proo rog, but he only got two blowups. Early in the trip I was demonstrating my technique o ishing rogs to them and the prop bass - the one that is supposed to bite on "Q" did exactly that. A big slurp and we had a 5-2 in the boat. A our pounder jumped totally out o the water but missed my "new" green rog. Dad was ishing a white rog and missed one and what happened next simply broke my heart. We were ishing near Buckingham - he was ishing the rog very well by now and had a huge bass take the rog (I saw it) and shake it around but he didn't set the hook. He said he didn't eel it and that probably was the case. He learned some painul lessons because he missed another bass around ive pounds. Shortly beore dark we heard a big explosing and one simply swallowed his white rog and that one made it in the boat - a little under our pounds. I think his conidence soared! While the bite wasn't great, my "new" green rog became my "new lucky" rog as a 7 1/2 pounder just sucked it under - no blowup at all. Since I had just caught my all-time "dink" rog ish (1 1/2 lbs) I wasn't sure how big this one was 'til I started grunting! What a hot ish - absolutely terriic battle!! Ater a brie break at dark, we began night ishing near Goose Neck and we started with a double hook-up and got 'em both. What the young man didn't accomplish with a rog, he made up or it with a junebug Dead Ringer worm. He caught 4 bass that weighed a little over 16 pounds. His biggest was just under 5 lbs. I believe he was 4 or 4. Since we were coming o a serious weekend cold ront, the night ishing wasn't real great, but we did catch 7 or 8 on Dead Ringers, 10" black Power worms, and one on a Weapon jig. No big ish that night, but about a 4 1/4 pound average. The trip ended about the way I let Clear Lake three weeks ago - same number o bass - 13, and almost the same weight or the ive biggest - 24 1/4 lbs. The weather was marvelous and so was the company - we were all glad to share a beautiul evening at Clear Lake.
    City: Yuba City

Tips: This was the irst time I can remember 12 and 13 inch bass attacking rogs. It was un to watch. I really didn't notice anything unusual except some the the weed mats in the south end didn't seem as thick. Most o our night ish were caught about 5 to 10 eet o water and were pretty aggressive. They seemed to want the worm moving a little aster than I like, but we went ahead and made them happy - so they would bite!!

Report: Bass Busters o Santa Clara County Night Fishing Tournament 8/24/02 - 8/25/02.It was a great night to be out on Clear Lake. Just a slight wind, clear skys, and mild to cool temperatures during the tournament. There were only 8 boats and ishing was pretty good or most o us. Fish were caught any number o ways. The winners said they caught a lot o ish over 3 with a dropshot rig and their limit came on Jigs, Senkos, and Dropshot (>21lbs.) We took second place and had a good night also. Me and my partner Ray H. caught our ish on Spinnerbaits, Frogs, Powerworms, and Jigs. We had 16.78 lbs. or our 5 ish and missed a lot o good ish on the rogs. We are both now determined to igure out how to increase our hook up on rogs. The next 2 teams tied or 3rd with just over 16 lbs. They also took there ish on a varity o baits; Spinnerbaits, Worms, and Topwater. Great Tournament or almost all the anglers. I we could have put a ew more ish in a couple o the boats it would have been perect. As ar as rogs go. I've seen Larry H. post about his green rog. Well I was using a Green Sumo Frog and my partner was using a White Tournament Frog. We had probably about equal blow ups on the rogs and we both only put 1 ish in the boat on the rog.I we learn how to increase our hook up we easily could have had our 25 lb. night, what we were shooting or.

Tips: Just get up there and ish this lake. It was a great time and your not inessing them!
