Clear Lake
-
Water Temp: 75
Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)
Report: Those o you that think I can't write a short report - watch!! Monday morning was very cool with og over part o the lake and a sti breeze. My client and I launched at the Oaks around 6 am and ished rocky areas around Rattlesnake Island looking or a big ish. We also threw a little topwater and some rogs - nothing - which didn't surprise me. This was the coolest morning in many weeks. I decided not to target big bass. We caught a ew smaller bass and I did lose a 3 to 4 pounder on a #214 Senko. Ater that I taught him how to dropshop and we spent the rest o the trip ishing a million docks without weeds and actually landed 50 bass - give or take 2 or 3. I lost count ater 40. About 10 were in the 1 3/4 to 2 1/2 pound range. Never hooked a big one though I saw them on the meter. We ished the east side o the Clearlake arm mostly - Pirate's cove, etc. It really was un - non-stop action! My client caught the biggest and the most and I think he had a great time! I know I did.
City: Yuba CityTips: I was dropshotting a 4 inch #240 Senko most o the time and I had my client using a worm that has been working well at Clear Lake lately, a Roboworm called Margarita Mutilator. With a name like that it better be special - and it was. Size didn't matter to the bass - my client used every 4 and 6 inch worm in that color that we had!! I ound it interesting that the 2002 spawn ish were in the 10 to 15 oot range and the bigger 2001 spawn ish were hangin' in the 15 to 25 oot range. I guess that makes sense!

Clear Lake
-
Water Temp: 85
Water Clarity: Stained (2-4 foot visibility)
Report: Fished Clear Lake, heard that the summer was a great time or top water action, well I ound it to be a little tough. Spent all day throwing a rog had some blow ups but nothing to brag about. Hit the tackle store in Lakeport (Tackle It), Great people. They switched me over to a Rico. Ater the sticker shock I hit the lake again, hit the places they showed me on the map and Wow, what a dierence I boated 8 ish, the largest a 7. They turned me on to a crankbait bite as well that boated a ew more good ish. Thanks
City: Santa RosaTips: Try using Rico's, LV 500's by Lucky Crat and Speed Traps. There is still a drop shot bite but most ish were in the smaller class.

Don Pedro Lake
-
Water Temp: 75
Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)
Report: Fished or 4 days and ound the typical tough conditions or summer at Don Pedro. 3-13 was the largest ish or me this long weekend. I caught 2 or 3 keepers each day and lots o small ish. Darthead salt and pepper Keeper Custom worms, (color #'s 1001B and 1031) along with dropshot 6" worms rom Keeper in Shad patterns (color #'s 1048, 1064 and 170) worked best. The ish seemed to be about 15 to 25 eet. The thing I did ind was that i you ished in the shad you saw on your meter, Lowrance LCX15MT, ishing was tough, but i you ished where you didn't see shad on the screen and came across bass, those ish would eat. Less competition or the artiicial out o the schools o bait I suppose. Most o the ish were in the river arms that I ound. Main lake stu was real slow. Fish slow with conidence. Have un!

Clear Lake
-
Water Temp: 79-83
Water Clarity: Clear (4+ foot visibility)
Report: Wow, I don't think I have EVER ished two more exciting summer nights weather-wise than the last two at Clear Lake. The lightning show both nights was spectacular (and didn't run us o the lake!). It really was hard to concentrate on ishing!Thusday night ound calm, muggy weather with the clouds moving in about 11 pm and some rain. Fishing, not catching, was abulous! Friday night was windy, a little cooler, and ishing was air or smaller bass up to 4 pounds. As a student o bass behavior, I just can't begin to tell you how amazing the dierence between the two nights was. The bass were in an aggressive mood as darkness ell Thursday evening, and instead o the usual shut-o at dark they kept right on eeding!! Both clients lost a big ish right at dark and I caught a 7 pounder about 15 minutes ater dark. Friday evening at dusk, same place, same baits, NO activity except or bass up to 2 pounds (the 4 pounder came about 1 am). I should have a great report o a 25-30 pound limit Thursday, but sometimes olks just can't put them in the boat and this was one o those nights unortunately. Again, it is the hook-setting thing or these big bass - some just have a hard time grasping how much energy it takes or a swit, hard hookset. They lost three big bass and about 7 or 8 others. Shortly beore we quit one got a 3-10 in the boat and the other ended with a 4-2 rom Shag Rock (I didn't think there were any good bass let there!) - I was happy or them and me! We wound up with 10 bass in the boat and a 20 1/2 pound limit. Thursday we started throwing Snag Proo rogs and the clients had a great time learning how to do that. I didn't think much would happen with the weird weather and we didn't even get a blowup - in about 6 dierent areas around the south end. Friday my client had great ishing skills but not too many bass to test them on. He did manage to catch 2 rog ish in the back o Konocti Bay, but they were only in the two pound range. The rest o the trip was hard work in the wind - very slow as I mentioned - but we did catch 12. The 4 pounder was landed on a Weapon jig - the only decent bass we hooked. We talked to another boat with the same story - only small bass. My Friday guy would have gone nuts i he had been with me Thursday night! That is the tough thing about guiding or me - I am thrilled or the clients that hit it right and sad or those who don't. Bass don't oten provide a level playing ield or tournament anglers, guides, or weekenders! I was reminded Friday night, ater Thursday's action, sometimes it's not the anglers ault when things are slow!
City: Yuba CityTips: Many o you have been interested in my bass eeding - carp activity theory. I maintain that the nights the carp are rolling, or when they start to roll (around 11pm to 12am), the bass ishing is usually good (as a general rule). So, how about Thursday and Friday nights? You guessed it - Thursday night the carp were pretty active, ESPECIALLY around dark (hint, hint!), and somewhat the rest o the time. Friday night - a grand total o TWO carp were heard. Hmmmmmmm! 'Nu said. Another interesting thing happened - when we started worm ishing Thursday about 7:30 pm one client was ishing junebug, the other green pumpkin, and I decided to ish a pack o Camo Berkley 6" Pulse worms. I have never used that color. The bass hammered them. That's my job - to ind what works. I gave them to my clients and their action picked up. I used that worm because it had a little sparkle to it. I sure hope Berkley still makes that worm!! Both nights we used Berkley Power worms, Camanche Jack zipper worms and Dead Ringers. The 7 pounder was caught on that Camo worm. We ished rocky areas both nights - mostly walls - no rockpiles. The ish were 10 to nearly 30 eet deep. I think all the quality bass we hooked were at least 15-20 eet deep which is normal when the surace is 83 degrees.
